Monasteries & Churches

In Paros, there are many temples and monasteries, which are worth visiting. Among them, the Monastery Logovarda with great history and combining harmoniously the fortress to the Cycladic architecture, the Monastery of Saint Anthony, the 15th century Marpisa with luxurious interiors, the Monastery of St. George Lagada where ascetic island's patron saint St. Arsenius, the Monastery St. John the Baptist with Cycladic architecture and the Monastery of Agios Athanasios in Naoussa in the form Kastromonastiro.

From the island's churches do not miss St. George in Naoussa with rich interior decoration, the marble Church of Trinity with its unique architecture in the village of Elm, and the church of the Virgin of September with a bust of the Virgin of 1592, in Parikia .

Folklore Museum

The Folklore Museum of Naoussa hosted an interesting collection of traditional costumes of Paros, and the whole of Greece.

Byzantine Museum

The Byzantine Museum of Naoussa housed in the monastery of St. Athanasius and includes a remarkable collection of Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons Parian mostly painters. Stand, the image of Descent (16th century), the Pantocrator (18th century), the Deisis (15th century), Virgin Mary and Child (16th century) etc. Among the exhibits there are wood carved objects, utensils worship and etchings.

Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Paros is located in Parikia and hosts exhibits dating from the 6th century. Among them Neolithic finds from the prehistoric settlement on the island Saliagko, relief of the poet Archilochus, the famous "Parian Chronicle" (marble inscription is engraved the history of the island), the statue of Victory of Paros, the tessellated Hercules etc.

Kefalos hill

Marpissas east rises the hill of Kefalos. At the top of the hill stands the monastery of St. Anthony, built in the 17th century. Hikers will enjoy the climb to the top of the hill. On the way we meet scattered stones, castle ruins and remnants of destroyed churches. The Venetian castle was destroyed in 1537 by the pirate Barbarossa, when the Venetian domination ended in Paros. Reaching the top, the visitor can admire the monastery, but a lovely view to the eastern side of the island.

Venetian Castle Naoussa

At the entrance of the picturesque port of Naoussa dominates the Venetian castle. Built in 15th century by the Venetian dynasty Sommaripa for fortification purposes. Today, though castled, is a major attraction bringing to mind images of the past.

Christian Basilica

1 km northeast of Paros, we find the basilica of three churches. Specifically, on the ruins of a Byzantine church in the 5th century, built in the 17th century three churches. But the early Christian church in the 5th century had been built over the ruins of ancient temples, covering thus chronologically all these historical periods.

Ancient Ceramics

In Parikia, in Dome, the ruins of ancient pottery workshop, dating from the 3rd century BC Excavations began in 1986 and continued until 1990 revealed a large complex pottery workshop, bringing to light two reservoirs, two large ovens, four smaller ones, a geometric tomb wall large ancient buildings and many ancillary areas.

Pythio-Asklipieio

Just 1 km from Parikia, on the road to Aliki, on the hill of St. Anne, are the ruins of Asclepius, a temple dedicated to the god of medicine Asclepius. The sanctuary, which is dated to the 4th century BC, is open, built around a source of bright white translucent marble of Paros. In the same region are also the ruins of an ancient temple that was dedicated to Apollo.
